When it comes to self-care, at first you might think of course I take care of myself, but at a deeper look, most of us are crazy busy, have demanding jobs, or are too consumed with others to make time for ourselves. Me-time is usually last on the agenda.
The big question is what is self-care and how can we do it?
Self-care is anything that we actively do in order to protect and maintain our mental, emotional, and physical health. No matter what you choose, the goal is to figure out which self-care strategies work best for you. Once you know what makes you feel good, you need to continue to use these methods, and learn how to implement them into your regular routine so you can boost your well-being long term. Self-care is not a one off, you need to keep it up to keep reaping the benefits.
Making simple changes to our lifestyle can promote self-care, e.g. sleeping earlier. I use this example, as we all know how terrible we feel after a bad night’s sleep. It can have a huge effect on how you feel both emotionally and physically, so it is key to have a routine and let your body, mind and soul to recuperate. This will allow you to be more resilient and prepared to handle whatever difficulties may come your way.
Luckily for us, there are a variety of self-care methods. Here are some basic tips to begin your self-care journey:
Gym/exercise
Dressing up/getting hair done
Managing time and being organised
Meditation
Having a pet
Massages
Knowing what you don’t enjoy doing and saying no
Self-care isn’t selfish, and there is no reason to feel guilty about taking care of yourself, it’s healthy to be self aware and know what we need to do in order to take care of number 1 and feel good. We are all different, so what worked for your friend, might not work for you, so try a few things and see what fits you best. REMEMBER – Self care goes a long way in managing stress and living your best life!
